Canyon Club Resort Marina News

Another Summer of Fun Tuesday, December 01, 2015

The 2015 season offered a large amount of opportunities for our slipholders, homeowners and invited guests to enjoy a wide variety of fun-filled events and activities.

First on our plate was the annual SOS (start of season) Memorial Day picnic where everyone gathered and enjoyed delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pies and all the fixin’s. From there we rolled right into June. A number of our slipholders had a great time participating in the 35th annual South Jersey Shark Tournament where they enjoyed some awesome fishing and dockside activities. The next 2 weeks were quiet, but that will change for the 2016 season. Many of you took advantage of the fantastic tuna fishing during that time and scored multiple Bigeyes, several of which reached over 200 pounds! So, circle June 24-26 on your calendars for our brand new Canyon Club Tuna Tournament. Details will follow, but in order to put you in the best position to catch, it will be an overnight format.

July saw us crank it up a notch with events happening almost every weekend... starting with our patriotic July 4th pool party featuring frozen drinks and ice cream treats poolside where a good time was had by all.

As our big game fishermen know, July heralds the beginning of the offshore season, and what better way to start than with the new Canyon Club Junior Anglers Offshore Challenge. We had 45 of our best young anglers from ages 7-17 “show their stuff,” fishing for white marlin, blue marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna in 2 age categories. When the swells settled, these junior anglers racked up some pretty impressive release numbers and showed their proud parents that the next generation is ready to step up and take over the tournament reigns. While this event was as competitive as any of our other tournaments, we definitely added some fun dockside by catering to all our different age groups. If you didn’t fish it this year, this is one you won’t want to miss in 2016.

Next on the agenda was the annual Viking/Ocean Showdown where owners of these two storied yacht manufacturers compete head to head for offshore bragging rights. After two days of hard fishing and one day of relaxing poolside and partying, the awards ceremony saw John Leek IV hand the perpetual trophy to Pat Healey which Viking Yachts gets to proudly display until next year’s battle.

For the past several years Canyon Club has been honored to host the Yacht Club of Stone Harbors Marlin Invitational. While 2015 saw a great turnout and awesome fishing, Tom Byrne and Jamie Diller, the longtime tournament directors, are really looking forward to the 2016 event which will be the tournaments 50th anniversary! Contact Tom or Jamie to receive your invitation to this prestigious event.

Speaking of anniversaries, the highly popular, record setting MidAtlantic tournament returns once again to Canyon Club on August 21-26, 2016 where their 25th year will be celebrated. From its inception, the MidAtlantic has always boasted prime-time fishing and million dollar purses. 2015 saw competitors vying for over 2.8 million dollars! Will 2016 see that prize soar to over 3 million? No one can say for sure, but what we can be positive of is that the 25th installment will be celebrated in the grand style that keeps all the top boats returning year after year.

Our annual Labor Day pig roast followed and while it may sometimes be referred to as the “end of season” party (attended by 700 of our closest friends)... we like to call it the kickoff to our wonderful fall season. And what a kickoff it was…Plenty of food, drink and fun with all of our boaters, homeowners and guests gathering together, swapping boating and fishing stories and enjoying the camaraderie. But remember, this really wasn’t’ the end!

September saw our annual Marlin Month in full swing with the same fantastic fall fishing that we have seen over the past several years. A dozen boats caught and released a boatload of white and blue marlin… all for yearend bragging rights, and just enough cash to make it interesting. Even the end of September is not enough reason to put those boats away. As of this writing the striper run was on!

But now as we inch ever closer to the winter season, we wish everyone the best holiday and New Year ever, and rest assured that we’ll be making plans for lots of Canyon Club fun under the 2016 summer sun!
