Record Setting Silver Anniversary MidAtlantic Comes to a Close! Saturday, August 27, 2016

In true MidAtlantic tournament style the Silver Anniversary edition of sportfishing’s “Main Event” came to a close on Friday evening with lavish award ceremonies held at Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May and Sunset Marina in Ocean City, Maryland. Indeed there was a lot to celebrate including a record cash purse of nearly $3.16 million and a record billfish catch of well over 800 white marlin and blue marlin, of which, over 93% were released! Worthy of note is the billfish catch record shattered the previous tournament best of 636 caught in 2014 by nearly 200 marlin!

Day Five of the tournament dawned hot with a light southwest breeze and sea conditions were reported calm offshore. The billfish bite slowed a bit in the Wilmington Canyon where a majority of the fleet was fishing on the final day of the tournament after two consecutive red hot days of fishing but the fleet of 109 boats fishing, including 69 from Ocean City and 40 from Cape May still found pockets of white marlin to pick away at. The evening’s weigh-in session got off to an early when shortly after 5 p.m. Captain Dave Graham backed Bob Nabrzeski’s Easy Rider based out of Lighthouse Point, Florida to the scale at Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May with a very large blue marlin in the boat. After much effort by the crew at the scales to carefully maneuver the fish out of the boat and lift it to the scale the huge blue marlin weighed-in at 754 pounds. Angler Bob Nabrzeski’s blue marlin not only captured the Heaviest Blue Marlin category but it also should be noted it was the second heaviest blue marlin ever weighed in MidAtlantic tournament history. Tony Demarco of South Brunswick, New Jersey aboard his Fantasia won the Second Heaviest Blue Marlin award with the 432 pounder his crew weighed on Day Three. There were no other qualifying blue marlin weighed over the tournament’s 400 pound minimum weight for the species.

In other news from Day Five which impacted the weight standings Captain Howard Lynch created a shake-up in the white marlin category when he put Kristin Jezierski’s Haulin’ n Ballin’ from Pasadena, Maryland in second place with a 72 pounder for angler Brian Keith. Captain Rich Barrett put Peter Cherasia’s Shark Byte from Rumson, New Jersey on the board in a tie for the Third Heaviest White Marlin award after weighing a 68 pounder for angler Chris Wood. Stephen Lewis’ MR Ducks from Ocean City, Maryland and Anthony Martina’s Sea Wolf from Mickleton, Delaware finished tied for Third Heaviest White Marlin award with Shark Byte thanks to 68 pounders each weighed on Day Three. Captain Patrick Brogan got Michael Savino of Brooklyn, New York on the board after weighing a white marlin of 65 pounds from Savino’s Texas Tea on Day Five. James Smith of Stuart, Florida captured the Heaviest White Marlin award with the 77 pounder he weighed on Day Two from his MJOLNIR.

The tuna category remained unchanged after Day Five as Stewart Hitchner’s Pez Machine from Barnegat Light, New Jersey took the Heaviest Tuna award with his 230-pound big eye caught on Day Two. Michael Flanigan’s Miss Budweiser from Palm Beach, Florida captured the Second Heaviest Tuna prize with the 156-pound yellowfin which was also caught on Day Two. The Third Heaviest Tuna winner was Adam Youschak of Wildwood, New Jersey aboard his Reelin’ Feelin’ with a 76-pound yellowfin.

The Heaviest Wahoo award goes to Ed Bondarchuk of Lighthouse Point, Florida aboard his Moore Bills thanks to the 75 pounder weighed on Day One while the Heaviest Dolphin in the tournament was a 53 pounder taken aboard the Fishing for MD from Dayton, Maryland on Day Four.

Some of the boats with significant billfish catches on Day Five include Gary Adler’s The Big Guy with eight white marlin released. Alan Sadler’s Intents released seven white marlin while Shark Byte released six white marlin and a blue marlin. Jamie Diller’s Canyon Lady and Edward Russo’s Big Deal each released six white marlin. Jon Duffie’s Billfisher, Pat Healey’s Viking 72, Bob Mormile’s Lizanne and Marty Judge’s Judge each released five white marlin.

Finally, as noted above, the tournament catch report is staggering. The 840 total billfish caught by the 157 boats translates to 5.35 billfish per boat for each boat’s three days of fishing and well over 1.78 billfish per boat per day for the tournament and all tournament records. It’s also important to emphasize that well over 93% of the total billfish caught were released.
